Getting Started
===============
Financial Wonder ("FW") is a powerful financial package designed especially
for the professional.
FW is designed for the IBM PC, XT, AT, 386, and compatibles with a hard
drive, PC or MS-DOS 3.1 or higher, 640K available memory. The use
of expanded and/or extended memory is highly recommended.
The program is distributed on this diskette with the following files:
Program Files
-------------
FW.EXE Program file
FWOPEN.EXE Program files for the Financial Wonder for OSAS version
(in place of the FW.EXE file)
FW*.OVL Program overlay files (the program has been divided
into several parts in order to conserve memory and
allow for easy installation)
FWOPEN*.OVL Program overlay files for the Financial Wonder
for OSAS version (in place of the FW*.OVL files)
FWRATIO Definitions of what each ratio represents
FWPRINT Stores all print options
FW.PIF Example PIF files for those operating FW under
MS Windows 3.0. This file should be modified to
detail available expanded and extended memory.
FW may be operated under the standard or 386
enhanced modes.
*.DOC On-screen documentation help files
Database and Examples 1 and 2
-----------------------------
(These files MUST be in the "DATA" sub-directory)
DEMO1 Demo file - This file has been created to arrive
at $0 Cash Flow for each period of data entry.
This will allow you to make individual changes
and review their effects. Simple formula methods
have been utilized for this example.
DEMO2 Demo file - This file displays creating sub-accounts,
some of the advanced formula methods, and the linking
of accounts and sub-accounts in using the formula methods.
Linking accounts (the results of one account
are based on the results of another account)
can be many levels deep (the maximum number of
levels is user changeable).
On-Screen Manual
----------------
MANUAL.EXE Text editor used to read/print all chapters
*.MAN The text files of the manual
Printer Installation
--------------------
SLATE.EXE Program to load print drivers
(not included with this limited version)
SLATE.PDB Print drivers for use with FW
PRINTERS.PDB Print drivers available to be installed by
SLATE.EXE
TESTDV.BAT Calls the program testdev.exe to test an
installed print driver.
(not included with the limited version)
Testing Program
---------------
EMSCHECK.EXE If you suspect a problem with your expanded
memory driver, running EMSCHECK may locate the
trouble.
Installation
------------
FW must be installed on your system's hard drive. The program will
operate from any lettered hard drive (ex:C,D,E) and from any directory,
however, wherever the FW program resides must have a subdirectory
named DATA and all files required to be in this subdirectory must reside
there. This program is not intended to be used from a floppy disk.
1) Place the program 1 disk in drive A or B
2) Make the logical drive A (type A: and press [ENTER])
3) Type INSTALL and press [ENTER]
4) Instructions will be provided on screen
To Load Printer Drivers
-----------------------
From the C:\WONDER directory type SLATE from the "WONDER"
directory, then press ENTER.
Print drivers may be installed one at a time until you choose to end
the install. The install program may be run at a later date in order to
install new or additional drivers. The main FW program will allow
you to change your active printer to one of the other installed printers
and will allow you to change typefaces. Only install the drivers
needed. Installing too many drivers will slow actual printing.
Printer drivers will be installed in the "WONDER" directory under
the file SLATE.PDB.
Chapter 33 provides details on the use of SLATE.
IMPORTANT
---------
All data files must reside in the \WONDER\DATA directory. FW
requires a full 640K in order to operate, therefore TSR's (Terminate
and Stay Resident programs) should not be used unless they are
relatively small. For example, Sidekick would severely restrict the
memory needs of FW, whereas a Screen Saver program should
operate without concern.
FW will take advantage of the memory manager "Memory
Commander," to expand available DOS memory space to 800KB or
900KB.
HIGH MEMORY MANAGER
-------------------
FW can make use of expanded and extended memory. To use
extended memory either HIMEM.SYS or a compatible driver such
as "QEMM" or "386 to the Max" needs to be installed. (Do not
install HIMEM.SYS if another driver providing XMS support is
already in use.) To use this memory, add the line
DEVICE=C:\HIMEM.SYS
or
DEVICE=C:\HIMEM.SYS /HMAMIN=64
(/HMAMIN=64 will only load HIMEM.SYS if a full
64K of extended memory is available)
to your config.sys file. If you have previously installed Microsoft
Windows 3.x, this change has already been made by the Microsoft
installation procedure. This memory can only be addressed if you
have an AT or 386 machine and have installed the HIMEM.SYS file
from Microsoft.
A copy of HIMEM.SYS (Copyright Microsoft Corporation) is
provided on the Program disk. You should copy this file into
your C:\ directory and change your CONFIG.SYS file as noted
above. If you have a more recent version of HIMEM.SYS or the
MS Windows version already installed, there is no need to change.
HIMEM.SYS MUST precede any other installed memory
managers in your config.sys file. Also, HIMEM.SYS is not
compatible with VDISK unless you are using DOS 4.0 or above.
Memory Commander
----------------
Financial Wonder is fully compatible with Memory Commander
from V Communications Inc. With an 80386 computer and 512KB
extended memory, Financial Wonder can operate with as little
as a 4KB video area. This allows Financial Wonder to operate
with over 900KB of contiguous DOS memory space, using Memory
Commmander.
Loading Financial Wonder
------------------------
1. Go to the C:\WONDER directory.
2. Type FW, then ENTER OR RETURN.
* Those using our limited-version, type FWLTD
* Those using Financial Wonder for OSAS, type FWOPEN
3. When the program displays the copyright notice,
PRESS ENTER to continue.
4. FW stores its data (the spreadsheet file) in virtual memory.
Rather than using all available resources, FW will use only
what is needed by the user.
In loading the FW program, two opening screens will help in
this decision. The first will review your system and notify
you of available expanded memory, extended memory, and hard
drive space. In addition, FW will note the largest file that
can be allocated on your computer.
Now press ENTER to view the second screen.
You can now request FW to allocate resources. If your file is
small, there is no need to allocate memory for the maximum
5000 financial accounts.
NOTE: For consolidation mode, enter the maximum number of
financial accounts, exclusive of duplicate account numbers.
If 100 files are to be consolidated, and each file contains
cash account #100100, this will count as just one financial
account.
FW has a preset minimum and maximum number of accounts for
each financial statement. Using the minimum of 500 accounts
will still leave room for about 50 additional accounts in
each financial statement.
If you use the minimum of 500 accounts, save your file, and
at a later date wish to add a couple of thousand additional
accounts, there is no problem. Just request additional memory
resources when loading FW.
Maximum memory allocations cannot be increased while FW is
operational. However, since the additional overhead of
managing a very large allocation of memory will have some
effect on speed and possibly hard disk storage (temporary
storage when sufficient expanded and extended memory is not
present), do not use five megabytes of memory if you plan to
operate only with small files.
5. The next display asks whether you have a monochrome or a color
display. Enter 0 for monochrome, 1 for color using a color
background, or 2 for color with a black background. (Color
selection has been preselected - however all colors including a
switch between 1 and 2 can be changed while FW is being used.)
6. Select to load a previously saved file, or to set up a new file.
7. LOAD a Previously Saved File
If you select a previously saved file option, you will be presented
with a listing of the names of files present in the
C:\WONDER\DATA directory. Move the cursor to your selection
and press F10. The selected file will be loaded into FW, leaving
you with the message "File loaded - Press any key to continue."
Press any key on the keyboard. You are now at the main pull-
down menu. Use the left-arrow-key to move to Screens and press
ENTER. Then use the down-arrow-key to move to Data Entry and press
ENTER. You are now at the position in order for you to enter data.
NOTE: Once the file has been loaded you may use any of the
pull-down menu selections.
8. New File
If you choose to create a new file, you will first be prompted for
some general information, such as the name of the Company, the
years to be forecast and the Company's month-end. All of this
information may be changed later by pulling-down the Files
menu and selecting FILE INFO.
You must now set up the periods of data entry. Although the
structure chosen may be changed at a later date this may entail
considerable extra work on the part of the user, from the need to
possibly change amounts or change forecast method selections.
Press / when you have completed your setup.
A set of financial accounts and account numbers will be created
automatically.
You will then be presented with 100 Seasonality screens. The
non-seasonal default values (100 percent/12 = 8.333 percent) have
been pre-selected. You may make changes representative of your business.
Seasonality may easily be changed at any time. Press "/" when
you have completed customizing seasonality. You may chose to customize
one or all 100.
Pressing F1, or other keys noted on the screen, will flip you
through each of the screens (each screen is numbered 1 to 100).
The new file setup has been completed, leaving you with the
message "Press any key to continue." Press any key on the
keyboard. You will be left at the main pull-down menu. Use the
left-arrow-key to move to Screens and press ENTER. Then use
the down-arrow-key to move to Data Entry and press ENTER.
You are now at the position in order for you to enter data.
(NOTE: once the file has been loaded you may use any of the
pull-down menu selections.)
